REVIEW: Inherit the Stars by Tessa Elwood

Inherit the Stars (Inherit the Stars #1)Three royal houses ruling three interplanetary systems are on the brink of collapse, and they must either ally together or tear each other apart in order for their people to survive.

Asa is the youngest daughter of the house of Fane, which has been fighting a devastating food and energy crisis for far too long. She thinks she can save her family’s livelihood by posing as her oldest sister in an arranged marriage with Eagle, the heir to the throne of the house of Westlet. The appearance of her mother, a traitor who defected to the house of Galton, adds fuel to the fire, while Asa also tries to save her sister Wren's life . . . possibly from the hands of their own father.

But as Asa and Eagle forge a genuine bond, will secrets from the past and the urgent needs of their people in the present keep them divided?

I received an ecopy of this book via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

MY THOUGHTS
I love sci-fi, especially space related sci-fi, so I was excited to read this book. Sadly, this book really fell flat.

Asa is a daughter of Fane, the youngest of three daughters. The house of Fane is one of the leading three royal houses of various planets. When Asa's sister, Wren, is in critical condition, Asa's father decides to marry off her other sister to one of the other royal families, as the heir. The problem: Wren is the heir and in order for the other marriage to work, Wren's life has to end. In order to prevent her father from pulling the plug on Wren's life, Asa pretends to be her sister and marries into the other family. Now, Asa has to deal with the downfall of her decision, the politics involved, and get to know her new husband.

This book had so much potential, but I was so confused. The futuristic world that this takes place in is so complicated, but there wasn't enough world-building for me to make sense of it. We're dropped right into the book, with Asa's sister already hurt, and in an infected planet. I ad no clue what was going on and I almost felt like I was starting a sequel. In fact, there is a prequel story, but you shouldn't have to read a novella in order to understand the actual book! I also felt like things we brushed over and just went too fast.

As for characters, I really couldn't connect that well with them. It's obvious that Asa cares for her sister, even though Asa makes dumb decisions (I mean, she tried posing as her sister into a marriage. She did realize that people would eventually find out, right?). All the other characters felt incredibly flat.

And by the way, I wouldn't call what happens in this book a romance. Asa is with Eagle, but really, nothing happens. They're in an arranged marriage together, have awkward conversations, and kissed a few times. I definitely didn't feel any sparks between them. To me, there wasn't any romance in this book.

IN CONCLUSION
Overall, I am sad that I have to give this book a negative review. This book wasn't horrible, but it missed the mark. This book felt really undeveloped in terms of character, world, and romance. Everything was just flat and dare I say, a bit dull. Thee idea behind this book was interesting, but I just couldn't get into this book.

I hereby give this book
2 Stars
Meaning: It was okay
