I loved the first book in the series. Even though I read the first book over a year ago, I still recall how amazing it was and the feeling I got when I finished it.
Zee was once being hunted by the vampires, but now they have realized that all vampires are connected to her. If she bleeds, they all bleed. If she dies, they are die. She's now protected within the empire of vampires and treated as the divine one. Her newfound home with these vampires causes Lucas to distance himself. He distrusts the other vampires and wants to leave. Zee has to figure out how to deal with her new status, Lucas's distance, and if she can trust anyone.
In a world where almost all YA novels romanticize vampires (with the exception of The Immortal Rules), it is so amazing to find a book that does not show vampires in a positive light. The vampires in this book are inhuman and bloody. Even the main character has these qualities at times. Basically, Zee is a badass.
This book has a large build up in the beginning, exploring the vampire world and her new role. This is not boring though. It was great learning more about the vampires and it also had a large focus on Zee's character, which was really great as well. All this time leads up even more to the action-packed end!
The romance was not a big deal in this book, which is unsurprising, as this is a sequel. It was a bit saddening that Lucas and Zee were having trouble in this book. Lucas distanced himself greatly, but it made sense because of the circumstance.
IN CONCLUSION
Overall, I loved this book! I know I'm not gushing in my review, but I really like this series. It has the original, dark and badass take on vampires that I absolutely love! If you are sick of all the YA vampire romances, I recommend this!
