REVIEW: Cracked by Eliza Crewe

Cracked (Soul Eater, #1)
Meet Meda. She eats people.

Well, technically, she eats their soul. But she totally promises to only go for people who deserve it. She’s special. It’s not her fault she enjoys it. She can’t help being a bad guy. Besides, what else can she do? Her mother was killed and it’s not like there are any other “soul-eaters” around to show her how to be different. That is, until the three men in suits show up.

They can do what she can do. They’re like her. Meda might finally have a chance to figure out what she is. The problem? They kind of want to kill her. Before they get the chance Meda is rescued by crusaders, members of an elite group dedicated to wiping out Meda’s kind. This is her chance! Play along with the “good guys” and she’ll finally figure out what, exactly, her ‘kind’ is.

Be careful what you wish for. Playing capture the flag with her mortal enemies, babysitting a teenage boy with a hero complex, and trying to keep one step ahead of a too-clever girl are bad enough. But the Hunger is gaining on her.

The more she learns, the worse it gets. And when Meda uncovers a shocking secret about her mother, her past, and her destiny… she may finally give into it.

MY THOUGHTS
This book both surprised me, yet didn't surprise me. I was expecting to like this book. It has a lot of high ratings and, call me morbid, but I found a book with a main character that eats souls very fascinating. What I wasn't expecting was how much fun this book was! This book looks and sounds dark, and it is dark, but it's the perfect combination of dark and fun!

What really made the book was Meda. She is so different than all the other heroines in YA. All the other heroines in YA have voices that merge together, they seem like different variations of the same person, but not Meda. She has her own distinct voice! And she's not a goody-goody, she is a monster and she knows it, she doesn't even try to pretend that she's not. Until she has to...

Another thing I really liked: I liked seeing her try to fit in with the "good guys" and pretending to be, well, not a monster. This is an odd little trope that I really like seeing in books. I loved seeing it in The Immortal Rules, I loved seeing it in this book. I also loved seeing how much idea grows and changes throughout the book!

There was also a very large lack of romance! In fact, there wasn't any (at least towards Meda)! I am not a big fan of romances dominated a book, so this made me very happy. What this book did have, was friendship! I really liked the odd, unexpected, friendship that Meda makes in the book, I won't say who, but it's such a great, amusing, friendship and it's a really good fit.

IN CONCLUSION
I pretty much loved everything about this book and I know you're probably tired of me going on and on about that. Don't get me wrong, though, this book is definitely not all fun and games, it is also very dark, with lots of blood and gore! This book is very exciting with a great, and different, main character and a very original story!
I strongly recommend it and I am very glad that I don't have to wait very long for the sequel!

I hereby give this book
5 Wheels!
Meaning: A new favorite!
